Major players in Taiwan form a forum to tap cloud TV market
Major IT corporations, cable TV operators and content providers have come together to form the Cloud Computing TV Forum (CCTF) so that they may pool resources and their technologies in order to penetrate the budding industry worth $300 billion annually.
This move is similar to many other forums and groups which have come together to gain control of their respective markets. CCTF has also taken inspiration from similar industry groups who have integrated to access a thriving cloud computing market.
The first chairman elected for CCTF is Jiang Ren-the, who is also the head of Cable Broadband Institute in Taiwan (CBIT).
CCTF’s primary aim is to develop a new platform for users which would allow them to access the internet from broadband TV networks and benefit from cloud computing content in a modern and a user-friendly environment.
In order to provide technology and share resources the forum receives help from software developers and IT specialists.
The forum has formed three committees that will tackle the problems of developing a cloud computing platform and framework, interface and content, and connecting digital terminal services with TV networks.
Regular meetings will be held by CCTF which will bring together researchers and corporate leaders to tackle problems regarding the development, use best practices, and discuss any needs of approaching the government for revision of the regulations that may become a barrier for cloud computing services in the future.
CCTF will also set a standard for all cable operators in Taiwan and its offshore islands so that customers may be able to enjoy a standard and integrated service.
Cheng Jun-ching, CEO of the CCTF, says that the forum’s target is also to promote domestic audiences to to “watch TV, use TV, and play TV” for their entertainment and information needs.
He also serves as the chairman of KBRO cable TV, one of the leading cable TV operators of the region. These operators control a combined customer base of over five million households.
Cheng said that CCTF will make TV more than just a TV for customers as they will now be able to interact with their sets and have many options.
The National Communications Commission and other officials have supported the formation of the CCTF. They encourage the forum’s efforts to fasten the development and adoption of the Cloud TV so that both cloud computing and TVs may enter a new era.
